However, the success of early English railways did not go unnoticed, and in 1834 a plan was developed for a railway from Amsterdam to the Prussian Ruhr area to replace the transportation system along the Rhine River. Although this initial plan was finally abandoned, other lines were opened in 1839. The technology was largely borrowed from England and Belgium, but from the outset Dutch engineers played an important role in the development of the network.

Apart from a short-lived state system, the first railways were built and operated by private companies, but when this did not result in an efficient network, the state stepped in again in 1860 to bring coherence. By 1900, the national network was complete, but labor unrest escalated, leading to the national strike of 1903, which reverberated for many years in the Dutch Parliament, railroad board rooms, and socialist political parties. The exigencies of World War I increased the grip of the state on the railways, which ultimately resulted in 1938 in the complete unification of the railways, albeit under public ownership.

In the 1920s and 1930s, competition from other forms of transportation resulted in a curtailing of services and the closing of unprofitable lines. World War II devastated the Dutch railway system and necessitated an almost complete rebuilding. In the postwar era, population growth, greater mobility, pollution problems, and lack of space for new highways led to an intensive use of existing railways and the construction of new lines to link new suburbs and airports with the existing network. The privatization craze of the 1990s separated the ownership of the network from its operations, but the final relationship has yet to be established.

About the Author
Max Brand is the best-known pen name of Frederick Faust, creator of such beloved characters as Destry and Dr. Kildare. I had never heard of Max Brand before I checked this book out at the library and I love him as a writer. I cannot think of one author today who could bring the flavor of the old west to mind like Brand did. His character descriptions really brought the story to life. While I am not a fan of westerns, I am a major dog lover, particularly of the stronger breeds. For me, this story was a page turner. I simply could not put it down. Brand has something exciting happening on every page and I was a captive audience from beginning to end. Great writing. They just don't make them like brand anymore.

An Outstanding Western Story

Comanche is a dog and a character in Brand's five star story, from start to finish. But the principal character is Single Jack Deems. The story is fiction, and is set in an unstated time, after railroads go west and before horses are replaced. Brand attributes acts to Comanche and Deems that might be hard to believe, except his writing skill makes them seem inevitable. If you can find enough time to read a book at one sitting, do it for this one.

Deems begins the story as an outlaw, temptation remains intense, and many of his actions continue in the outlaw vein. He has a good side, however, and Brand shows that as well. David Carlyle, "Another Land."

Could not put this book down

This was a fantastic piece of historical fiction, I could not put it down. I kept picking it up to read a few more pages every chance I got. The characters were really intriguing. The story moves along at a quick pace, and I actually learned something from the focus on the northern "smart" way of living vs the southern way to relax and be merry. It's a reminder from the author that you have to find a balance in life.

Against this background, further chapters on fundamental issues identify possible regulatory models and discuss central principles of mediation law and practice. In particular, the work considers harmonisation and diversity in the law of mediation as well as the economic and constitutional problems associated with privatising civil justice. `Why haven't you mediated?' is fast becoming as common an utterance from the bench in the UK as `why haven't you settled?' And the hapless and somewhat shamefaced clients whether claimants or defendants typically look bemused.

Like so many litigious folk, they have staunchly insisted on having their `day in court' and never for a moment, it seems, have they ever considered mediation as an option. But option it is - and increasingly so. And if you as a practitioner wish to widen your perspective regarding mediation, (particularly if you have international clients) you need this book, recently published in hardback format by OUP.

Within its 1,400 pages, the book places at your fingertips, the accumulated research and commentary on mediation of some thirty learned contributors from jurisdictions around the world.

Describing and analyzing the law and practice of mediation in -- we count twenty-three countries -- this volume presents a wide spectrum of comparative research on mediation, its aim being to promote understanding -- and inspire discussion -- of regulatory issues.

Mediation does offer a number of advantages. As the editors comment, it aims to resolve conflict, ostensibly in the best interests of the parties concerned and of course it reduces court caseloads, freeing up considerable court time and costs both for the parties certainly, not to mention the governments involved.

The book's 25 chapters are grouped under three headings, the first being `fundamental issues; the second, mediation in the European Union-- and in Part III, mediation in the wider world including Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Switzerland and the USA.

The book contains a wealth of resources for research, almost too numerous to mention here, but which include, an index of over twenty pages, copious footnoting and at the end of each of the chapters, extensive lists of literature, legal resources, legal instruments and web resources, all facilitating easy reference to the relevant research materials.

Interestingly, the book began as an embryonic idea which emanated for the most part from the Max Planck Institute which was commissioned by the German Ministry of Justice in 2007 to prepare a comparative expert report against the background of the European Mediation Directive and which ultimately formed the basis for the (then) new German mediation law.

We are summarizing here, but along with a host of other institutions and individuals the idea emerged of publishing a book for English-speaking readers - and here it is; an enlightening and up to date comparative insight into mediation law across a wide range of international contexts.

If you or your colleagues are involved in any aspect of mediation, or for that matter, any form of dispute resolution, this book may well prove a revelation. The law is stated as of 1 June 2012.

Poems like salt, poems like honey, poems that comfort, poems that sting

This poetry collection is breathtakingly beautiful. Ijeoma Umebinyuo is writing for women, about the experience of being a woman. The poems are about self-worth and self loathing, about love, about trauma, about family. Some are about Nigeria; some are about being a student abroad. There are poems so short that you can hold a whole one under your tongue and smuggle it across international lines, and others that are longer and unfold a whole story.

Here's a very short one that I love:

Stay
let me tell you
how salt fell in love

one day,
salt found water
and just would not let go.

--Ocean

Here's a slightly longer one:

Your lover sped away
leaving tire marks on your skin.
You have resolved to eating
yesterday for breakfast.

I watch you gather your memories
like firewood,
warming yourself
for yet another lonely night.

There are also about mothers and daughters:

You are your mother's amen
to all her prayers
the calm to her trembling soul
she gathers our happiness
rubbing it on her skin
till she begins to glow

Another, "Glory"

Before the year ends
teach yourself five things
your mother never taught you
then, teach yourself five things
you want to teach your daughter

Let me leave you with one about homesickness, called "aching hearts//missing home"

At the embassy,
they never warned us about days
america will feel so lonely,
we will gather our mother tongue
hastily swallowing words
that remind us of home to keep warm

I really can't find the words to say how much this book mesmerized me. The words, the stories, the perspective, the everything just resonated deep in my soul. I was fulfilled and just felt like writing.

Disjointed & Confusing

I love reading about time travel so I was anxious to dig into this novel when I received it. Sadly, it came nowhere near to reaching my expectations.

The story concept caught my interest at the start. Petra is a high school student that ends up traveling back in time when she visits a fortune teller. For me, everything immediately fell apart after this point. The start of it was that Petra was dressed up as a princess, including a tiara.. yet the "peasants" didn't so much as look at her! Her wardrobe would have set her up to be wealthy royalty with the lower classes bowing, being differential, etc. There was simply nothing realistic about the time period she went to. That is what makes time travel novels so delightful to read - the different customs, ways of thinking, learning history.

As for the characters, I felt no connection to any of them. In fact, I had to look at other reviews to remember their names. :(

Several times I found myself feeling confused and flipping back to see if I had missed a page (or chapter). It just felt like a lot was left unsaid. I'm not sure if this was meant to make it mysterious and make us curious or if the writer had it all in her own mind and kinda neglected to realize we, the readers, needed to be told things to "get it". After awhile I quit caring enough to flip back and would just skim past the confusing parts and hope it would make sense later. Now for the truly frustrating part: It never came together to make any sense! Instead we were given a cliffhanger and another book.

I wanted to love this book. I really, really did! Perhaps that is why I feel doubly disappointed. Needless to say, I won't be reading the next book. :(

Fascinating but frustrating

I found this story both fascinating and frustrating. I enjoyed the premise and liked the characters. They were intriguing, particularly Emory. However, the delivery of the story was inconsistent. It seemed to jolt with difficulty between being light-hearted and dealing with serious issues. Additionally, sometimes the storyline jolted between scenes. There were characters too, like Marshall, who seemed to show up only to force the plot to its next point with no clear story-related reason for it. Perhaps subsequent stories in this series will reveal that there is a reason for that, but I found it difficult to accept without at least an allusion to that possibility. Also, although I'm far from an expert, I'm not sure about the historical accuracy. For example, drinking tea is mentioned, even though most of the story is set in the early sixteen hundreds and tea didn't reach England until about 1650. Perhaps the author meant some different kind of leafy brew, but still ... There were some noticeable spelling mistakes too.

Could not get me engaged

I absolutely adore the idea of time traveling, period displacement, realm displacement, stumbling into a new world, or whatever you want to call it, I love it. We follow Petra Baron being magically thrown back 400 years into the past. She meets people that remind her of her modern day friends, forces her way into a plot about keeping the King James Bible from mass distribution, and reunites with her family.
Here's what kept it from a lower rating: edited well.
Here's what kept it from a higher rating: It wasn't written well. Characters lacked depth. In fact, the only character that seemed to have any emotion was Garret, and he was hardly a character. There was no emotion in the book. There was no magic either - how was she transported through time? I guess by an earthquake. Things were mentioned, like the Black Shuck - what was that? Apparently we had met it in the book but the author did not really make the reader aware of this. There's a romance between Petra and Emory. Well, at least the author tells you there is one, but it just sort of happens. He kissed her. that was the description. Petra didn't think anything of it. I didn't either. I was entirely apathetic throughout this book.
