Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art, by Timothy Clark

In early modern Japan, 1600 1900, thousands of sexually explicit paintings, prints, and illustrated books with texts were produced, known as spring pictures (shunga). This catalogue of a major exhibition at the British Museum marks the culmination of a substantial international research project and aims to answer some key questions about what shunga was and why it was produced. In particular the social and cultural contexts for sex art in Japan are explored. Drawing on the latest scholarship from the leading experts in the field and featuring over 400 images of works from major public and private collections, this landmark book looks at painted and printed erotic images produced in Japan during the Edo period (1600 1868) and early Meiji era (1868 1912). This title is only available through BRILL/Hotei Publishing in the United States of America, Canada and the Phillipines.

Review

“Overall I would recommend this book highly – the tow strongest points are the absolutely brilliant organisation and the very high quality of illustration.  The information is thorough without being intimidating, and well explained without being patronising.”  (Veterinary Practice, 1 November 2013)

“Regardless of one’s approach to teaching of veterinary infectious diseases, this book should be an excellent instructional tool.  Although intended for students in veterinary microbiology, it is extremely comprehensive and has sufficient scope and depth to be used by graduate students as well.”  (Journal of The American Veterinary Medical Association, 15 June 2012)

“Overall, this is a well-written, logically organized, informative, and valuable resource, which covers both the laboratory aspects and clinical features of veterinary microbial diseases. Both the first and last sections are unique to most microbiology book. This second edition has made substantial improvements over the first edition.”  (Doody’s, 13 April 2012)

“The new edition of ‘Veterinary Microbiology and Microbial Disease’ is an absolutely first-rate textbook of veterinary microbiology … When a second-year veterinary student referred to Quinn and others as the ‘bright-coloured book’, demonstrating to me that we already had it in the library and that students were using it, I could breathe a sigh of relief that they were in safe hands with this superb book.”  (Veterinary Record, 24 March 2012)

Great book
By Bunnyrunrun
We use it in my class at Veterinary medicine, and it's great; it's pretty easy to understand, and the chapters aren't that long, so it's possible to read a chapter in the bus og on the train.

Would recommend it for everybody interested in Microbiology in animals, and in zoonoses.

“[H]ighly readable . . . Anyone who teaches – or is preparing to teach – introductory planning, economic development, or real estate development in the American context should be familiar with the Garvin perspective on planning and the greatest hits catalogued in this book. . . . Students of economic development, real estate development, and public works – Garvin’s future ‘stars’ – could be well-served by the city case studies and their inclusion of both the projects and the people.” (Journal of Planning Education and Research)

“The Planning Game, with clarity of voice and purpose, is a timely resource of insights and ideas much needed at this time.” (e-Oculus)

“The book is a fine production, with high quality illustrations, and would be of interest to a diverse audience beyond those with a planning expertise. . . . Each person and city is the subject of of a detailed and substantial chapter, and each personality, project and process has been thoroughly researched and compellingly communicated through writing and illustration.” (Urban Design (UK))

“[B]eautifully illustrated . . . Original maps and custom photographs enrich Garvin’s verbal descriptions of these transformative projects. Those alone are worth the price of the book, but what really makes his scholarship exceptional is the knowing interpretation of how the players played the game successfully: their strategies, their playing the rules, and their physical imprints on the respective cities. . . . Read this book to uncover the extraordinary knowledge and insights he possesses. It’s an experience of discovery and inspiration for city lovers everywhere.” (Constructs)

“Author Alexander Garvin, an urban planner and academic, brings a down-to-earth practicality leavened with just enough starry-eyed idealism to his exploration of how to build better cities. . . . The colorful personalities of the planners behind the transformations and the colorful maps and photos make for easy reading or grazing.” (The New York Observer)

“Alex Garvin’s The Planning Game delivers a most articulate and compelling reminder that the fundamental rules of effective city planning are timeless. Here, lessons from the greats and their cities―from Haussmann, Burnham, Moses, and Bacon―serve as a wonderfully practical guide for current players in the game. The Planning Game is a total pleasure to read.” (Daniel Doctoroff, CEO of Bloomberg L.P. and former deputy mayor of the city of New York)

“The insights Alex Garvin brings to The Planning Game are the product of hands-on experience dealing with real cities, and he supports them with absolutely fascinating historical material. I found this book to be a practical and indispensable road map for communities wishing to achieve excellence.” (Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., City of Charlestown, South Carolina)

“No one writes about the modern city with more knowledge, insight, and imagination than Alexander Garvin. The Planning Game is about hope and possibility. How to change the world you live in: how planning is actually done
By Dead Parrot
The Planning Game is a fabulous new book from Alexander Garvin.

If you are completely new to the idea of city planning, it will, in an enjoyable and totally understandable way, introduce you to everything you need to know to gain and understanding of how the planning of cities works. If you are a professional city planner, it will excitingly let you in on what you really should know about the process that most academic programs in city planning never teach and most planners get wrong. And no matter how well-versed you are in this most complex and important process, it will provide fascinating and unexpected new insights into specific truths of what happened in some of the cities under discussion. There are parts of this book that will provide profound new insights to anyone who reads it.

Planning for Alex Garvin is all about change. Right from the opening paragraph of The Planning Game, he lays it out:

Somebody is always trying to change things. Every day, city and state agencies, chambers of commerce, private developers, and local citizens propose ideas to improve our cities and suburbs. Not all of these ideas will result in change: it is the process we know as planning that determines, to a large extent, which projects succeed and which ones fail to change our communities. Planning brings together the forces of government, business, finance, politics, and public opinion (and all the individuals who represent them) in order to produce change. (The Planning Game, p. 9)

In his almost a half-century of practicing and teaching, Garvin has become one of the most respected advocates in the world for what he terms,

the public realm approach to planning—an approach that emphasizes the importance of public investments in determining the future of what we own and control: our streets, squares, parks, infrastructure, and public buildings. It is the fundamental element in any community—the framework around which everything else grows. Cities that adopt the public realm approach to planning make it easier and cheaper to do business, make their citizens…and improve the quality of life of their residents. By combing public investments into a coherent agenda, they provide the leverage for capturing and guiding private investment to operate in the public interest while, in the process, improving whole neighborhoods, districts, cities, and even regions.

An agenda of this sort is not a wish list of things it might be nice to have, setting aside considerations of priorities or feasibility. It consists of actions that can and will be taken; otherwise there will be no change. This book argues that the only planning that matters is planning that is entirely implementation oriented. (ibid., pp. 13f; emphasis added)

Garvin describes who the players in the planning game are, and the respective roles they play: the public, community activists, visionaries (e.g., Olmsted, Ebenezer Howard, Le Coubusier), reformer-critics (e.g., Jacob Riis, Lewis Mumford, Jane Jacobs), government agencies and public officials (especially mayors), lending institutions, and private developers and public entrepreneurs. He also explicates the rules of the game (which actually determine who wins and who loses in the planning game): the first set are economic rules—the necessity of focusing on present and future market demand, the maximizing of net operating income, the calibration of risk and reward at every stage of a project’s development, and the advisability of borrowing as much as possible to cover the capital expenditures (as opposed to the operating expenses); the second set are political rules (i.e., the necessity of obtaining and maintaining the approval from the right mix of players)—starting with one’s base (active support from the stakeholders), reducing negative perceptions and diminishing resistance from opponents, cultivating public support, and securing the needed certifications. In all of this, Garvin gives lively, illustrative examples from actual city projects.

The heart of this marvelous book, however, is Garvin’s brilliant and extensive exploration of four cities that were successfully changed by excellent public realm planning, and four great planners who each had massive positive effects on the changes that took place in his city: Georges-Eugène Haussmannn in mid-19th century Paris, Daniel Burnham in early 20th century Chicago, Robert Moses in New York between 1920 and 1960, and Edmund Bacon in Philadelphia in the latter half of the 20th century.
We all know about the Grands Boulevards Houssmann built and the drinking water and sewage systems he created (and those with more historic knowledge know about his relationship to Napoléon III); but do you know about his clever programs for financing his plans? Everyone knows about Burnham’s famous 1909 Plan of Chicago and his exhortation, “make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood'' (and the architecturally knowledgeable know the great buildings he designed [e.g., the Rookery in Chicago, the Flatiron Building in NYC]); but how many know about how he utilized his relation to Chicago’s business community—and to important business figures like Charles H. Wacker and Walter D. Moody—to insure that the process of change he designed would continue to inform Chicago’s growth for decades? As for Robert Moses, most know about how extensively he transformed New York (although those stuck on Bob Caro’s far-too-well-known view of him will have a much more negative view of him than others of us who know the more complete story), and everyone knows about his highway building, right?; but how many of you could you guess that the number of highways Moses actually built was “none”? (Parkways, of course, yes; but highways, no!) …Read the book!

As with all of Garvin’s books, The Planning Game is powerfully illustrated with many gorgeous photographs he has taken. (Garvin will never write about a place he has not actually been; and this is a lesson all architects and planners should carefully heed.) This volume, however, contains some of the most novel and informative maps and diagrams he has ever created. The visuals even further imbue the already lively text with a vitality and impact that adds to the incredible clarity of the work.

In many ways, The Planning Game is Garvin’s most radical work: it will challenge many of your ideas about how the planning process actually works, and about what actually happened in the development of the important cities it explores. And this is true not only of the four major cities in the book, but in all the many extended examples of other important instances of planning—including his great discussion of planning in Boston, Baltimore, Santa Monica, CA, Charleston, SC. The legendary Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., who has successfully led Charleston’s government and its growth and improvement for over 30 years, has written the following for the jacket of the book:

The insights Alex Garvin brings to The Planning Game are the product of hands-on experience dealing with real cities, and he supports them with absolutely fascinating historical material. I found this book to be a practical and indispensable road map for communities wishing to achieve excellence.

So, whether you are already one of the players in the planning game and want to “improve your game,” or whether you’d like to become part of this exciting and meaningful game and are looking for an introduction and how-to, or if you are just intellectually curious and interested in this most significant aspect of the world you live in, The Planning Game is a book you should buy and read.

Lessons From History Offera a Refreshing Mandate for Contemporary Problems
By Ryan S.
In The Planning Game Alex Garvin offers a refreshing thesis for practitioners and students of the planning process: It has never been all strawberries and cream. Analyzing the changes imparted by four planners from different points in history--Huassmann in Paris, Burnham in Chicago, Moses in New York and Bacon in Philadelphia--Garvin ingeniously melds the statistical with the practical, the historical with the professional, and, fundamentally, the academic with the pragmatic to prove that the planning process has never been an easy enterprise.

The first two chapters of this book provide a basis for which the four principal actors can be judged. Garvin offers an urban outlook that, while rehearsed in his earlier work, is here presented in its most refined manner and is a essential prelude to the analysis that follows: Indeed, by starting with a contemporary take on city planning and its imperatives, Garvin only strengthens his argument that the more things change the more they stay the same. The rules of the game, as Garvin presents them, may evolve around the margins, but the planning process is now and has always been about grand ideas, consensus building, team work, and the salesmanship of proposals that are agreeable to the marketplace. For someone who has grown up in an environment guided by reactive rather than proactive planning, this background material was a revelation.

As the second half of the book unfolds, Garvin's focus shifts to an analysis of the four aforementioned planners. While the mere focus on these four characters suggests that they are indeed worthy of consideration, Garvin's tone is admirably unbiased. Not only do we hear about their triumphs, but we also learn of their demises. Garvin explains the brilliance of each man while also describing the downfall of each, leaving the reader to make her or his own opinions about the relative efficacy of each. What is paramount for all of them, though, is that each was a team player in the Game.

Garvin's research is impressive. There were several times during the course of the text that this reader noted new research about the details Garvin unearths on the scale of the projects discussed. Whether it is the lengths of water lines for Haussmann or the miles of highways for Moses, the quantitative, factual research underpins the complimentary qualitative discussions of each process. The Planning Game is an art and a science, and Garvin deploys a similar two-punch strategy in his discussion.

If complacency or hubris can be blamed for the demise of the planners discussed, the depth of Garvin's research and its use in the service of an analysis rooted in professional experience ensure that this book will remain a key companion for historians and practitioners. At its heart, Garvin's argument should be not only refreshing to an American citizenry that has become disenfranchised by the constant excuse among its planners that "things are just too hard today," but also inspirational for the next generation of planners yet to confront the future of cities in an increasingly urbanized global community.

Refreshing look at four urban heroes
By Dan M.
The Planning Game is a powerful reminder that creating meaningful change in our cities is still possible. All it takes is the right recipe of vision, entrepreneurship, and a willingness to engage the public.

Garvin outlines the players of the game, the rules of the game, and highlights four of its victors. The cast of characters may be familiar--Baron Haussmann, Daniel Burnham, Robert Moses, and Edward Bacon--but Garvin paints them in a rich and refreshing light. He depicts Daniel Burnham not as a visionary architect but as a savvy businessman whose clever advocacy instigated a planning process that continues to impact Chicago today. He describes Robert Moses, often portrayed as the unstoppable force behind modern New York, as a shrewd but imperfect city manager who assembled the right team to get things done.

Garvin makes a hopeful argument. 19th Century Paris and 20th Century Philadelphia are not so different from today's cities. We just need the right mix of players playing by the rules. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about building better cities.

They present an informed analysis of the current challenges facing HRM in Europe including different responses to the economic crisis, migration, flexible working, and generational differences in an aging workforce as well as challenges to employee interests. A comprehensive framework utilising a macro – mezzo – micro perspective emphasises the importance of institutional issues and stakeholder interests. Finding God in the Waves: How I Lost My Faith and Found It Again Through Science, by Mike McHargue

From the host of the popular podcasts, The Liturgists Podcast and Ask Science Mike, a story of having faith, losing it, and finding it again through science—revealing how the latest in neuroscience, physics, and biology help us understand God, faith, and ourselves.

What do you do when God dies? It's a question facing millions today, as science reveals a Universe that's self-creating, as American culture departs from Christian social norms, and the idea of God begins to seem implausible at best and barbaric at worst.

Mike McHargue understands the pain of unraveling belief. In Finding God in the Waves, Mike tells the story of how his Evangelical faith dissolved into atheism as he studied the Bible, a crisis that threatened his identity, his friendships, and even his marriage. Years later, Mike was standing on the shores of the Pacific Ocean when a bewildering, seemingly mystical moment motivated him to take another look. But this time, it wasn't theology or scripture that led him back to God—it was science.

In Finding God in the Waves, "Science Mike” draws on his personal experience to tell the unlikely story of how science led him back to faith. Among other revelations, we learn what brain scans reveal about what happens when we pray; how fundamentalism affects the psyche; and how God is revealed not only in scripture, but in the night sky, in subatomic particles, and in us.

For the faithful and skeptic alike, Finding God in the Waves is a winsome, lucid, page-turning read about belonging, life’s biggest questions, and the hope of knowing God in an age of science.

Review
“Through the lens of neuroscience, McHargue makes his case for valuing religion not for its factual explanatory power but rather for its ability to give meaning to human existence . . . For those who fear science will rob them of both God and Christian community, this work may offer much-needed hope that Christianity and science can coexist.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Mike McHargue tells you about the science of everything in a way that is both interesting and immediately applicable. In Finding God in the Waves, he employs this gift on a whole new scale by explaining the science of how to walk with God–especially for those who doubt God is real at all."
—Donald Miller, bestselling author of Scary Close and Blue Like Jazz

“One of the most original and moving accounts of faith I have read in recent years. Anyone who has tussled with doubt—and who hasn’t?—should read this book.”
—Tanya Luhrmann, professor of anthropology, Stanford University, author of When God Talks Back

“More than your typical ‘science vs. faith’ book, Finding God in the Waves is a deeply engrossing story about the experience of doubt, the thrill of discovery, and what it means to be human. Mike is the rare storyteller who can make you laugh, tear up, and feel a sense of wonder, all on the same page—and in this delightful book, he has delivered an essential, unprecedented read on the role contemplation plays in how we can know God, even in an age of skepticism.”
—Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upward, founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation

“Extraordinary. It’s so rare to find a book that is both this important and this much fun to read. Funny, intelligent, and disarmingly honest, Finding God in the Waves gives voice to a generation of faithful skeptics and masterfully navigates the tricky terrain of faith, science, belief, and experience in a way that honors the humanity of atheist and believer alike. It’s the kind of book that forever changes how you see the world and yet reads like a comfortable conversation with an old friend. With this work, Mike McHargue has established himself as one of the most thoughtful and necessary Christian voices of our time.”
—Rachel Held Evans, author of Searching for Sunday and A Year of Biblical Womanhood

"No one merges science and faith, mystery and reason better than Science Mike. It's magical. They should call him Magic Mike, if that's not already taken. Read this book!"
—Pete Holmes, comedian, star of the HBO comedy Crashing

"Mike McHargue’s life has straddled two diametrically opposed worldviews: conservative Christianity and secular humanism. His fearless search for the truth led him out of the strict confines of his Southern Baptist upbringing, but his persistent experience of God wouldn’t let him remain an atheist. In Finding God in the Waves, McHargue offers a vulnerable, relentlessly logical account of the deconstruction and reconstruction of his faith that’s sure to challenge skeptics and believers alike. His story will resonate with anyone who’s ever doubted, been the odd one out, or struggled to make sense of their faith. And by giving readers this intimate window into his own journey, he will both help doubters grow in their respect for faith and help believers grow in their respect for science."
—Matthew Vines, author of God and the Gay Christian, executive director of The Reformation Project

"This fascinating book is unlike any other I've read. Finding God in the Waves is one part story, one part science, one part theology, and taken altogether it sings of truth and wonder. Rather than placing facts and meaning at odds, Mike invites us into the freedom of both."
—Sarah Bessey, author of Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith and Jesus Feminist

“Faith and doubt exist more closely than many of us acknowledge. We want to relate to a God we can neither touch nor completely understand. In Finding God in the Waves, it feels as if Mike is sitting at a table inviting the reader to bring questions and fears to a conversation about how our doubts can actually bring us closer to God and not further apart. This book is for the believers and the doubters, the nerds and the creatives, the skeptics and the faithful. The message of hope and beauty in this book is for all of us.”
—Amena Brown, spoken word poet and author of Breaking Old Rhythms: Answering the Call of a Creative God

“This is the best book on navigating the tension between science and faith that I’ve ever come across. For any who desire to have some sort of faith or spiritual practice, but who also love science and don’t know how to navigate the apparent conflicting claims of both, Finding God in the Waves may be one of the most important books that they will ever read.”
—Michael Gungor, musician, author of The Crowd, The Critic, and the Muse

“This is the most honest, challenging, and insightful book on reclaiming a lost faith that I’ve ever read—utterly unique and unexpected. I had one ah ha moment after another as Science Mike cast my faith—and my doubts—in a more hopeful and encouraging light. I couldn’t put it down.”
—Peter Enns, author of The Sin of Certainty: Why God Desires Our Trust More than Our “Correct” Beliefs

"A rare and needed voice, McHargue reminds us that science and faith are not opposites, but allies. Brimming with honesty, vulnerability and a deep appreciation for the mysteries of the universe we inhabit, Finding God in the Waves will mean so much to so many."
—Ryan O’Neal, Sleeping At Last

I didn't want to like this book (from a still-unconverted atheist)
By Mark Traphagen
[WARNING: This review contains spoilers, if it is possible to spoil a memoir. If you prefer to go on Mike's journey via his book without my "giving it away," you may want to skip this.]

I really got off on the wrong foot with Science Mike.

My first encounter with this book came in a Facebook post promoting a personal appearance by the author at a Christian university, posted by my friend and former professor, biblical scholar Pete Enns. I think it was actually the subtitle of the book ("How I lost my faith and found it again through science") that set off alarms in my BS detector.

I assumed FGitW was yet another book of Christian apologetics. As someone who spent 30+ years in deep evangelical faith, including long stints as an officer in several churches and eventually obtaining an MAR degree at a conservative seminary, I was well-versed in apologetic arguments. In fact, similar to Mike, I lost my faith when I realized that none of those apologetics ultimately held up. At best, they functioned as props for believers worried about challenges to their faith, to assuage their cognitive dissonance.

That's what I assumed Mike was trying to do. But once I read the book, I realized I was wrong.

It turns out Mike has no interest in converting me or anyone like me back to his faith. In part, that's because his current "faith" [SPOILER ALERT!] isn't anything that any "orthodox" Christian believer would recognize as truly Christian. So what is it?

Put simply, after two years as an ardent atheist secular humanist, Mike realized that something profound was missing. The missing part was a sense of transcendence, of meaning beyond the purely rational, of inspiration, as it were. But his journey back to that was not really a return to the same faith he had left two years before (which I had assumed it would be from his subtitle).

So what "faith" did he come to? That it doesn't really matter if the God of the Bible (and all that comes with that) is "true" in the sense that traditional Christians think of that truth (God an actual, personal, being; Jesus's divinity, atoning death, and physical resurrection; God answering prayer, etc.). What matters (to him) is that the God-concept imprinted in his brain is beneficial and useful to him, and pursuing that God brings him peace and makes him a better person.

That's why Mike doesn't care if he converts me. He's perfectly happy if I find the same things without having to pursue any God-concept. In this book, he's sharing his journey and his choices. He never presses for them to be anyone else's. What he does hope to accomplish, though, is to provide a way for those who want to believe (in whatever way) in the Christian God to do so without sacrificing science or ethics.

My real reason for giving FGitW five stars, though, is for the surprising, almost brutal, honesty of this book. There is absolutely no attempt by Mike to sugar coat anything. Unlike any "case for faith" book I've ever read, Mike lays out the reasons for skepticism and unbelief clearly, with no attempt whatsoever to explain them away or deny their validity. This was the most shocking and at the same time delightful aspect of the book, and the part that disarmed my initial skepticism toward it.

In the end, this book did not change my current belief. I am still an agnostic-atheist (agnostic epistemologically--I embrace uncertainty, and thus the possibility of gods; but atheist in that I find it highly improbable that such gods actually exist as our religions conceive of them). But as I said, converting me was never Mike's aim. What I did gain from this book is a deeper appreciation of the parallel things I now pursue, though I call them by different names than Mike does.

the painful process of unlearning my spoon-fed theology and seeking deeply ...
By Devon
I remember years ago sitting around a campfire talking with some kids I mentored about God and the questions that surround this mystery. One child shared a story about how his church had brought in a creationist to “totally destroy science.” In other words they brought in a man who held very strictly to the biblical teaching of a six day created, 6,000 year old universe. Anything that taught otherwise was to be rejected.

I remember sitting through the Religion Program at Florida State University and hearing lecture after lecture that revealed that the Bible didn’t behave the way I had always been taught it did.

I remember going through the pains of deconstructing and aimlessly trying to reconstruct my own Christian faith; the painful process of unlearning my spoon-fed theology and seeking deeply to identify the truths about Jesus and God.

When you work in ministry, belief is kind of a big deal. When you lead bible studies people have expectations that you teach a certain way. But when you don’t line up with those expectations, it can be a very scary and isolating place to float. Whenever you try to explain, people often push you out or try and conform you back in. But you can’t unlearn certain things. What I’ve been finding in recent years has brought such freshness and beauty to my life. I’ve found that I’m not alone.

In Finding God in the Waves, Mike McHargue tells the beautiful, hilarious, and absolutely heartbreaking story of his own journey through faith, atheism, and a return to God through science. He has so beautifully captured a place and isolation that so many people have found themselves in as we learn more about ourselves and the world. With each new discovery our old definitions and language come into greater tension. What “Science Mike” has done here, is create a book that will make a lasting impact on the great debate of faith and science. What Science Mike has done here is create a book that will humble every person who reads.

Imagine being a Deacon of the Southern Baptist Church; leading Sunday School, playing in the worship band, baptizing believers, and leading people to the Lord. Now imagine that coming to a heartbreaking, life-crumbling realization that there is no God. What would you do? How would you respond to this? Who could you tell?

Mike’s story places each of us in the painful world of being a wolf among sheep. Your whole community believes something passionately that you no longer can accept. And worse, they now believe that because you deny the faith, you will be separated from God forever in hell. Now imagine your entire marriage and identity existing around this faith you no longer hold. How would you go on?

This is what happened to Science Mike after he began to see that certain declarations of his Southern Baptist faith didn’t behave when looking closely with logic and reason. So Mike faked it for two years. In the book we see the story of loneliness and loss as Mike tries to keep his secret from his community. After all he’s a leading member of this Church. What would you do when you hold information that could cripple the faiths of all of your congregants. Do you go in with a baseball bat and tear down all the idols? Or is there still beauty in what they believe?

Finding God in the Waves is a beautiful opportunity for each reader to play the skeptic and understand the isolation we often put on people when their beliefs begin to shift from orthodox. Are there ways of knowing God that are compatible with what science has revealed about ourselves and the universe? And Can the church bring into question some of its more traditional beliefs with this new information?

This book has a power to it. Mike’s life has been crafted in a way that robs his search from the venom that comes into the conversation of Science and Faith. In Mike’s atheism he found that there are many Christian claims that simply had no basis for validity when truly observed and thought through. But what happens when you experience God as an atheist? Do you return to all the things you used to believe even when the facts don’t add up? For many believers these “facts” are essential to following Jesus. But what if you can’t unlearn what once led you away from God? No matter how hard you try to make it work? How do you move forward?

What Science Mike has done here is what many atheist writers have done before. Mike tells you the story of how he lost God. Mike deconstructs the Christian faith in ways similar to Dawkins, Bart Ehrman, Hitchens. He brings to light the inconsistencies of the faith and he challenges you to process the information. But anyone can deconstruct something. As a believer in God, Mike challenges each of us to ask what actually is the point of all of this. In his search for truth in the midst of mystery, Mike brings each of us to reconstruct our faith through the lenses of science and reason. Not rejecting all that we are learning about our brains and the universe, but bringing it along with us. Mike has created a book that honestly could stand for decades to come as an end to the divisiveness of certain faith vs. scientific arguments. Mike has invited all of us into a holy tension.

Mike’s story is beautiful. I laughed so loud I scared those sitting around me at my local Starbucks and I hid in the same corner as I cried my eyes out. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a more honest and purposeful book. His life has been weaved a certain way that allows him to speak from a seemingly “no reason to bullsh–” perspective and I think this book will do great healing for the church. I don’t believe that anyone could walk away from this book without being humbled. Mike shows us a grace-filled way to approach our differences and to be okay with both sides of these discussions. Not to mention, you’ll sound so much smarter knowing the information he loans you so freely!

Mike invites us all into the waves of his life, and in them we find God more beautifully than ever.

Thank You
By TheMooreYouKnow
Mike, I don't think I can thank-you enough for writing this book and sharing your story. I've been deconstructed for a while now. Your story and your perspective give me hope that I can find God again, and not feel insane for believing nor feel like a heretic for believing differently.

To You, the skeptic, the atheist, the deconstructed, whose wondering if this book is worth it, I can not do justice to the hope that bloomed inside my chest as I read through it's pages. I have been anticipating this book, while having a very real fear of being let down. In the year of having my faith fall completely apart nothing has come close to describing how I've felt. The agony having given everything, always everything, my whole life to God, and come up to face with the looming certainty he's not real. Of being a minister with a degree in theology and none of it could save me. Of knowing every answers other Christians could and did give me backwards and forwards because I had used those very same words for others. Nothing has given me the perspective I needed to guide my way back to God. I tried to hold on so tightly but it was all slipping through my fingers like sand. How could I be a christian if I didn't believe in the infallible historical accuracy of the bible? How can I make sense of Science, God, Jesus, and the Resurrection with out feeling like a nut job for believing? I can't even talk to God because all my doubt closes up my throat at the very thought of praying. I wanted so badly to find a way back but it has seemed impossible. I honestly had gotten too tired of fighting it anymore. I was becoming more and more certain that my God wasn't only dead, he never was to begin with.

This book hit everyone of those for me. Mike is very real in his heartbreaking and amazing journey through doubt, faith, and finding God again. I was amazed by how his doubts mirrored mine almost completely. It's so compelling I read it in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. It was like finally reaching the surface after almost drowning. I had to keep reading to keep breathing. Not one single part of this book was a let down. It just gets better and better. His perspective on prayer, the bible, Jesus, and the church are so practical I finally feel like I have a frame work I can build on. It is absolutely worth reading. You won't regret it.

Thanks again Mike, I needed this book more than words can say.
