Nourishing Practitioners by Nourishing Destiny

Lonny Jarrett is one of the few authors who provides a complete analysis of the five elements that can be applied to everyday practice. I found as I read his book, which I did several times, various patients came to mind (others were not so clear...). Patients also related to the descriptions of the five elements as it affected their lives. The approach provided me with the extra information I needed to better treat an energy imbalance, rather than symptoms alone. The way Lonny combines the things we learn, the way we interpret the world, and the make up we bring to it, was practical and applicable. He seems to be more from the Worsley school with its emphasis on the psychological rather than the cosmological school. If more books like Lonny's come to print, I believe Western Chinese Medicine will really have come of age.

Superb, unusual, and thought-provoking

This book is genuinely eye-opening. It is an advanced text focusing on five-phase acupuncture models. It discusses various phase types, and also utilizes case studies to clarify his perspective. It is highly psycho-emotionally oriented, and therefore useful to add to the more standard library of acupuncturists. Along with Jeremy Ross' book, I use this book most frequently.

Good Information, Not for the Faint of Heart

Be aware that "Nourishing Destiny" is not any kind of "how-to" manual for the practice of TCM. It is a book about ideas at the foundation of TCM, their origins in chinese mythology and philosophy, and their application in healing practice. This is a book of theory, not a manual.

This book doesn't in any way pretend to be a light or escapist read, and that's good, because it's not. It's dense, richly packed with information and analysis you won't find in such a thorough package anywhere else. Or so I've been told by others who've done more reading on the topic of TCM than I have as yet.

If you want an entertaining, chatty discussion of TCM, this probably isn't your ticket to that. However, if you want a thorough grounding in this ancient way of seeing the world and Life, or if you're intending to practice any of the healing modalities that are based upon this tradition, then "Nourishing Destiny" is a supremely solid and intelligent approach to it.

I'm still working my way through this book, two months after I received it. Not my usual MO, I can tell you! The reason why is that I find myself nodding off every time I sit down to study it's pages. Not because I find it boring; if it were boring, I'd just stop reading it. No, it's so incredibly dense with esoteric, foreign concepts that I have to go into a kind of half-trance to partially comprehend a lot of it. This isn't a bad thing. My whole construct of reality is receiving a refreshing shift and expansion because of this exercise in peering at life through an "alien" worldview. It does tend to send me into Noddyland, though.

Follow Dr. Hunter's protocol to achieve remission

Dr. Hunter has the answer to Crohn's and American doctors should adopt his methods as best as they can in the U.S. health system. I wonder if he does not have more reviews here because it is a challenge to follow his protocol. When our daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's, we did not realize that the U.S. is NOT at the forefront of this disease. Our first GI doctor told us that no one knows the cause or the cure, but there is medicine. That doctor put her on prednisone, told us diet didn't matter and prescribed Immuran as the drug of choice. When she had a severe reaction to Immuran, we switched doctors. By this time, we were beginning to learn more and had heard of treating with elementary formula. Our new doctor endorsed this protocol. So we started her on formula and began a prednisone wean. Then, influenced by this book, we fed her broths and started an elimination diet to re-introduce foods. In the UK, Dr. Hunter has a nutritionist counsel each patient for several months during this period. We played it safe and stuck with a limited diet supplemented by continued formula (which provides both extra nutrients and calories). Our daughter now feels well, weighs in the 75th percentile, height in the 90th, and has has been free of her Crohn's symptoms (fever, diarrhea, weight loss) for more than a year. Since we want to decrease the formula, we are re-reading this book and trying to more closely follow his advice. Over the past year and a half, we have become much more educated and so we have returned to Dr. Hunter. Diet does matter because bacterial balance is key. The medications simply complicate the situation in the GI and spin the disease out of control. Formula plus diet calms the system and restores normal functions. Sure, it's hard to follow a diet, especially for a kid. But we see this time as an investment in her health and instruction on how to manage her condition for life.

The Natural way to beat this debilitating disease

It seems that when ever you have a health problem the quick fix of throwing drugs at it is the option you are only given. It is true that drugs do have a role to play in helping us with disease but a there is often a price to pay in terms of side effects and damage to other structures within the body. It is also often the case that they are only alleviating the symptoms and not dealing with the cause. Prof John Hunter has looked at what seems to be the process going on in Crohn's and UC and worked out a way to deal with that problem by diet rather than a lifetime of heavy duty steroids and immunosuppressants. However he also covers those very drugs that are used so you understand that option and also the other joint, eye, and hearing issues which my gatroenterologist seems feel is outside her area of expertise.

Emphasis on Diet is Nice Change of Focus from Other IBD Books

The author practices in the U.K., where I believe dietary treatment of Crohn's is more common than in the U.S. Appreciated the sections on elemental diet and returning to food (specifics on implementing an exclusion diet). Good amount of discussion on theories about bad bacteria in the gut and what could fuel it or starve it. Also thought that the explanations of why things work were pitched just right for me (scientific concepts communicated in layperson's terms). He profiles the differences in treatment, diagnosis, etc. in Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis throughout. I would have liked some cites to the research studies noted, since some of his views differ from other books I have read. In general this was very helpul.

Just another Encore Publishing gyp of a book.

This broccoli has been warmed over again. And it's just as bad as it ever was. Plus it was published as a Kindle eBook as well as a paperback. The book absolutely ruins the healthy aspects of broccoli by the addition of questionably poor choices of other ingredients in the 30 recipes copied off the Internet.

This is nothing but a reworked copy of the fake "doctor doue, md" dreamed up by Encore Publishing to sound legit. The fake doctor book was published 1-31-2013. All the recipes are derivative copies of recipes off copyright protected Internet sites and not written by anyone at Encore Publishing beyond cutting, pasting and scrambling the same ingredients, quantities, punctuation and screwing up the directions to make it seem original when they aren't.

These recipes are now offered published 11-24-2014 but it is a copy of the exact same Internet rip-off recipes with a new "fake author" name of "Johanna Davidson" with all the processed high sodium ingredients copied out of the fake doctor book. All these copied recipes of a previous book filled with derivative copies of recipes off copyright protected Internet sites and not written by anyone at Encore Publishing beyond cutting, pasting and scrambling the same ingredients, quantities, punctuation and screwing up the directions to make it seem original when they aren't.

I can hardly wait for fake copies 3, 4 and 5!

If you like recipes using frozen chopped broccoli, cheese 'food', and canned condensed soups this book is for you. If not, continue searching. There was even a recipe for a broccoli cheese frittata using canned condensed cream of broccoli soup as the only broccoli in the recipe.

Using frozen chopped broccoli isn't too bad, but combined with condensed soup and and cheese 'food' it's just gross.

Biblically Consistant and Intellectually Satisfying

Dr. Sailhamer is one of the world's foremost Hebrew Scholar's. His scholarship is only surpassed by his devotion to the Biblical text. Dr. Sailhamer is committed both to the authority and the inerrancy of the original manuscripts. His book is an honest, in depth, scholarly study of the Biblical texts of creation geared toward the layman. He views the creation account as a literal, historical account and the days of creation as literal 24 hour days. The essence of Dr. Sailhamer's book is that Genesis 1:1 describes the creation of the universe during an indeterminate amount of time; Genesis 1:2-2:4a describe the preparation of the land (the Garden of Eden/Promised Land) over six literal days. This is NOT a variation on the GAP Theory, nor is it an attempt to twist the Scriptures into compliance with contemporary views of science. It is the attempt of a brilliant and godly man to wrestle with the Scriptures in order to gain a better understanding of the meaning of the text. His interpretation is always based on the Hebrew text, its grammar, syntax and, most important of all, its context. Any honest scholar will admit that no interpretation of the Genesis account is entirely satisfying; all are to a greater or lesser degree problematic. Dr. Sailhamer's work comes closest to providing a satisfying solution, a solution that is consistent with the context of Genesis 1:1-2:4a, as will as the context of the entire book of Genesis, the Pentateuch and the whole of the Scriptures. If you would like a more in depth study of Genesis I would highly recommend Sailhamer's commentary on Genesis in the "Expositor's Bible Commentary" and his book "Pentateuch as Narrative". Sailhamer's works on Genesis and the Pentateuch have replaced Umberto Cassuto's writings as my most valued secondary sources for the study of the Pentateuch.

WELL WORTH READING

this is definitely one of the more memorable theological books i've read. i'm sure sailhamer has gotten some flack for his departure from the "orthodox". basically he suggests that Genesis 1 may be more a descrition of God's prepararion of the promised land rather than simply a literal (if not brief) synopsis of the creation of the universe. whether one believes, hates, or passively accepts the various assumptions of "evolution", one must at least wonder how we (as Christians) are to view scientific facts and theories that conflict with the biblical message (or at least our perceptions thereof). sailhamer's suggestion is not a new one. this can be found as well in earlier work by j lightfoote as well as some older rabbinic writings. anyway, this is a fast read and will be worth the time!

Close...but no banana...

The thesis is that *ha-eretz* in Genesis 1 refer to "the promised land," hence the days of creation refer to "palestine" not the the Cosmos. He cites several sages (most notably Rashi and Ibn Ezra) and 17th century biblical scholar John Lightfoot.
He cites a text in Jeremiah, which alludes to the earth becoming "void and without form" etc... This is a "proof text" for Sailhamer's thesis that "ha-eretz" is Israel, however the text refers to Israel and *surrounding* countries.
Personally I think it more likely that "ha eretz" in the mind of the author of Genesis is the fertile crescent, while the desert was (as it is) "void and without form" (tohu wa bohu). In bronze age Palestine, *this* probably *was* the "earth." As knowledge of Geography, interpreters kept making the text more "universalistic." (You see a similar development in Greek Mythology--in the Fifth century B.C. the "ends of the earth" was Sicily, in the First Century is was Spain.)
Nonetheless the book holds many interesting theological insights, especially with regard to the parallels with the tabernacle and it is a substantial contribution. Also recommended are his PENTATEUCH AS NARRATIVE and INTRODUCTION OF OLD TESTAMENT, which are more scholarly works.

Participation in Old and New

This book by Robert Webber was very insightful. Written for immediate application and practice by worship leaders, it was helpful in understanding true blended worship. Blended worship is more than singing both hymns and choruses, or having a band and a choir. Blended worship merges the rich tradition of the faith in its worship practices with contemporary culture. Webber effectively expounds the fourfold pattern of worship for today's church.
I was especially encouraged by the effectiveness of creating opportunities for participation throughout a service. So many elements of our worship allow the worshipper to be a passive recipient instead of an active participant. Much can be gained from the richness and depth of true blended worship which Webber not only talks about, but gives practical guidance for. Below I will list three thesis that I found useful from this text.
First, in the 1990's two forms of worship renewal, liturgical and contemporary merged into what is now called "blended worship." Blended worship is characterized by three concerns: "first, to be rooted in the biblical early church tradition; Second, to draw from the resources of the entire church; and third, a radical commitment to contemporary relevance (16)."
Second, in planning worship a distinction must be made between content, structure, and style. The content is unchanging. It is always about the triune God. The structure is the established fourfold pattern of Gathering, the Word, Thanksgiving and Dismissal, practiced since the early church. While the content and structure of worship remain fixed, the style is always changing. "There is no one style of worship that is suitable for all people always and everywhere (21)."
Third, as culture shifts from a modern to a post-modern paradigm, the style and approach to worship must shift as well. There is a renewed interest in the visual and experiential elements of worship. "In contemporary society the heart is reached through participation, and all approaches to worship - traditional, contemporary, or blended - need to learn how to achieve services characterized by immersed participation (29)."

In recent years we have witnessed a seismic shift from an emphasis on dynamic preaching (sermon-driven service) to dynamic music and worship (worship-driven service). Additionally we have seen the rise of contemporary worship in the life of the church. "Planning Blended Worship" by Robert Webber is a guide which helps congregational worship leaders plan worship in a create manner, mixing and blending the old and the new together.
Webber believes that effective worship can blend the traditional fourfold pattern of worship (gathering, word, table, and dismissal) with the free-flowing forms found in many churches today. He believes that blended worship is characterized by three concerns: "to be rooted in the biblical and early church traditions; to draw from the resources of the entire church; and a radical commitment to contemporary relevance" (1998:16). Each chapter includes helpful charts and diagrams and a concluding ?guideline? section allows the reader to personally work through the preceding material.

Webber is the guru of worship with a broad breadth of knowledge and insight. In Planning Blended Worship, Webber notes that Christians in America once sought the best preaching. Now they seek the best worship. Worship is the "center of the hourglass". "Everything the church does moves toward public worship and all its ministries proceed from worship" (1998:29). Webber argues that protestant worship renewal is moving in the direction of restoring the fourfold structure of gathering together, hearing the Word, responding with thanksgiving and being commissioned forth into the world (1998:15). He argues that blended worship is characterized by three primary concerns: to be rooted in biblical and early church traditions, to draw from the resources of the entire church and a commitment to contemporary relevance. Utilizing his excellent knowledge of traditional, biblical and contemporary worship practice and theology, Webber draws together numerous practical resources. Following Webber's practical planning guidelines, these resources when used creatively and with variation can make blended worship awesome.
