Flora decides early in life to take advantage of her environment. From a safe hiding spot in her first-grade classroom home, she learns to read along with the children. When her siblings go off to make their way in the world, she continues her education. Her acquired skills allow her to warn her family when poison is placed in the school after a careless brother leaves mouse droppings on the head mistress's class register. She meets a handsome white mouse, survives a suitable number of harrowing experiences, and saves her family yet again after they move to an unsafe haystack. Fisher's black-and-white sketches aptly capture the characters' essential mouseness while illuminating their slightly anthropomorphic individuality. The cards are great. I do prefer this small book postcard format--it's much easier to remove cards for mailing and it's nicer if you want to keep them intact in a book as well.

However, you can get these 12 movie posters and another dozen by ordering the Classic Science Fiction Movie Posters: 24 Cards set instead--for the exact same price. The 24 set is glossier. The only downside here is the perforated edges, instead of the smooth edge in the 12 card set.

self-taught via this beautiful book

i love this book. i'm currently working on 3 projects at the same time using various sizes of cords--havent' finished one yet but i had to write this review because i think this book is just beautiful. i didn't see that it was japanese when i ordered it which to me is a HUGE bonus because i adore craft books from japan. they're some of the most beautiful books i own and this one is just like it. i was thrilled when it came in. there's absolutely no translation issues either which is another huge plus. it was created by some kind of huge nation-wise macrame society of japan so seems to be an authentic authority. i knew absolutely nothing about macrame but this book seems to cover it all--both small-scale jewelry pieces (sennets) and then what i was interested in--larger-scale "panels" for wall-hangings or bags, etc. lots of patterns, tons of different knots, clear directions and its beautiful to boot. so often you get a craft book and you have to imagine all the examples but with better or more interesting aesthetics? not here. the people who did this have excellent taste (i think) so its inspiring, too. i really, really love it.

Woah. New favorite.

This book showed up a lot sooner than the delivery date. I'm so happy with it, I'm really into tying hemp and what not, but I also have another macrame book besides this one. This one may be my favorite. It has tons of small patterns and ones I've never seen before. Love it! And it came without any damage, just brand new.
I'd definitely recommend this book to beginners and advanced macrame artists.

great book but....

this is a great book especially for a beginner like me..the only thing i didn't like about the book is the separation of the photos for the projects and the instructions because of that i keep on scanning the book and wasting my time looking for the certain projects and how the project supposed to look like.

The World Reduced to Grass and Insects

This book attempts to conceptualize the idea of a full scale nuclear exchange between the cold war superpowers, since the idea itself is now "unthinkable". To explore this lack of understanding the author first explains in detail the immediate and long lasting effects of full scale nuclear war. Then, he comments on the situation, making a bid for sanity in an insane situation. The author believes that self-destruction and even planetary destruction "is not something that we will pose one day in the future... it is here now" (182). Schell believes that only a fundamental change in the belief system of the people of the entire planet can erase the danger currently hanging over the world; no amount of arms limitation or reduction will end the threat of total annihilation.

Required Reading -- for Anyone

Schell takes the most compelling subject imaginable -- the very real possiblity of nuclear annihilation -- and puts it into gripping, passionate prose. Anyone with a concern for the human race should read Schell's account of the effect of nuclear weapons on nature and civilization. And anyone afraid of being humbled or disturbed needs Schell's reality check all the more.

Death without end...

I first became aware of the work of Jonathan Schell through his two excellent books of reportage on the Vietnam War, entitled The Village of Ben Suc (A Vintage Book, V-431) and The Military Half: An Account of Destruction in Quang Ngai and Quang Tin Schell utilizes a most effective technique to convey the horror of war: a very flat affect, in the style of Joe Web's "Just the facts, mam..." He manages to capture the rationales of those who do the killing, and after 40 years, I recall, and even quote his descriptions of helicopter pilots who felt they had skills and techniques to differentiate "hard-core VC" from "innocent peasants" as they flew over, at 200 mph. Of the lakes of ink that have been spilled attempting to capture the experience of the Vietnam War, these two books will always remain in my top ten. Sadly, I note that my reviews at Amazon are the only ones posted on either book.

"In the Fate of the Earth," as the title suggests, Schell goes global. No longer is he addressing a dirty little war half way around the world, fought by a slender percentage of the American population, and viewed by the vast majority on their TV sets, over dinner. The war that Schell fears, a nuclear holocaust, is one that would come crashing into everyone's living room, TV or no. The book was written in the Cold War period, 1982, when the Soviet Union and the United States had thousands of nuclear armed missiles pointed at each other. The military doctrine of the time went by the suitable acronym, MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction.) The rationale, as it were, assumed the "players" were rational, and would never "push the button" since they would know it meant their own death as well.

Alamogordo, New Mexico is in the first sentence in Schell's book, and I live roughly half-way between nearby Trinity site, where the first atomic bomb was detonated, and Los Alamos, NM, where man's mind "created it," with a primary tool being mathematics, and the black board. Schell's first chapter is entitled "A Republic of Insects and Grass," suitable, since that is about all that would be left if the button was pressed. In his flat, scholarly style, without real histrionics, he describes what the world would look like if the holocaust came to pass. Not for the "fun read" crowd for sure. Regrettably, this possible outcome is considered all too infrequently. Fittingly, Schell quotes Kafka: "There is infinite hope, but not for us."

In his second chapter Schell moves deep into eschatology. Not only is all mankind wiped out, but "they can't get up when the film stops, and try again." Mankind, and its achievements on earth are gone forever, beyond recall. Schell does pose the arguments against a heightened concern, due to no second acts (p. 117), and then proceeds to critique them. To me, it is only so much "icing on the cake." I'm still in the school that if everyone is killed, that alone should be reason enough, and to devote a third of the book to more philosophical musings about the eternal emptiness is, well, redundant.

Schell presents a strong polemic against nuclear weapons, as well as a call for action. He concludes with: "...as I trust and believe, we will awaken to the truth of our peril, a truth as great as life itself, and, like a person who has swallowed a lethal poison but shakes off his stupor at the last moment and vomits the poison up, we will break through the layers of our denials, put aside our fainthearted excuses, and rise up to cleanse the earth of nuclear weapons."

Thirty years on, and his trust might be shaken. It hasn't happened. The Soviet Union has collapsed, which lessens the possibilities of the Big Holocaust, but on the other hand, there has been a proliferation of nuclear weapons, expanding the possibilities for a World War I beginning, in which a smaller country uses its weapons first, and a tit-for-tat "chain reaction" occurs, involving all the major powers. I see where Schell continues to try to focus our attention on the problem of extinction via nuclear weapons in a recent book entitled The Seventh Decade: The New Shape of Nuclear Danger (American Empire Project). Bravo for his efforts in fighting "the good fight." Though this book can be a bit redundant, perhaps it needs to be, because there is no real action yet that would justify Schell's "trust." 5-stars.

Interesting but wordy

The book touches on some advanced topics in spirituality. These of course have no basis of confirmation in today's science but nonetheless have been experiences of some folks. The author does a great job of balancing the pragmatic with the seemingly fictional sublime. The writing did seem a bit wordy but is worth a read by a spiritual aspirant.

Gloria Frolek Clark, PhD, OTR/L, BCP, FAOTA, has worked for more than 35 years in early intervention and school practice. She was cofounder of the AOTA Early Intervention and School Special Interest Section, has been a member of the AOTA Commission on Practice, and has been a member of the AOTA Pediatric Specialty Board. She is currently in private practice and is President of the Iowa Occupational Therapy Association.

Barbara E. Chandler, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, has been an occupational therapist for 37 years, most recently in home health and early intervention. She has served as chair of the AOTA Early Intervention and School Special Interest Section. She currently is teaching at Shenandoah University.

If you like books that give you an overview, and in typical AOTA fashion, refer you to resources that are hard to acquire or have to be bought for most of the interventions, programs, and other clinical hands on knowledge you may be looking for, than this is for you!

Submission = Power

This book was amazing! Embracing the Holy Spirit in our lives and walking in His enabling power through submission is an amazing process and critical to the life of every Christian. God has called us, human beings, to be ambassadors for Christ to this world and bring to it His love, power, and glory. We can not do that on our own and when we try, we screw up royally. The great commission can not be fulfilled without submission to the Holy Spirit which leads to His empowering in our daily lives to live it out. Great book for every new Christian and any Christian wishing to be free from the religious spirit.

Fantastic reading

For anyone interested in the work of the Holy Spirit and how He pertains to our daily walk with Jesus Christ this book is absolutely wonderful. I would encourage anyone, long time walker, just a beginning walker or just someone who is vaguely interested. This book with take you to new places. Lots of Scripture which is important to verify the words written. Well written and keeps your attention.

This book is for HUNGRY people.

Keith Miller is one of the most passionate, on-fire-for-Jesus believers I've ever seen. His life is an example of what the power of God can do to change a life that was heading from bad to worse! This book was born out of many different encounters and revelations from the Lord and has so much richness and treasure to be unearthed. The thing I like best about it is that it's STUFFED with scriptures to back everything up. I know alot of times teaching books like this have only a few verses here and there, but Keith really digs deep in the foundation of the Word and makes sure he backs everything up so that his understanding won't be skewed by ignorance or wrong interpretation. The revelation in this book is so fresh and cutting edge--I haven't heard anyone teach on this previously--and yet it completely lines up with the Word. The message is I think part of the new revelations the Lord is releasing for the time we are living in right now, and wow do we ever need it!

If you are looking for a deeper understanding of how the Holy Spirit operates and what you need to be asking and seeking the Lord for in order to carry out your specific calling, get this book!

A very inspiring book! I've never been into politics much but this book has opened my eyes to the reality that my lack of interest in political and governmental affairs is not only hurting me and my family, but all other families as well. We hold a tremendous responsibility to advocate for children, marriage, and families. This book has inspired and motivated me to speak up and defend families because it is, after all, a sacred duty that we hold to do so. If we don't speak up, others upholding beliefs that will hurt families will.

This book is easy to become enthralled with. Professor Wilkins experience in being an advocate for the family, on the world stage, is eye opening. He moves from a hard working man on the front of world 'rights' issues to an even harder working man on the Family and Child advocacy stage. The events are riveting and inspiring. A wonderful book that gave me great insight!
