Wielding their swords in the name of their faith, the crusaders originally set out to reclaim Jerusalem and its surrounding territory in the Middle East. Increasingly, however, Eastern Europe and the last remaining bastions of pagan Europe became the targets of their religious zeal.

The era officially began in 1147, when the Saxons, Danes, and Poles, responding to Pope Eugene III's call, initiated a crusade against the Wends of the Southern Baltic. This was followed by crusades against the Livonians, Estonians, Finns, Prussians, and Lithuanians. By the 13th century much of the responsibility for sustaining these crusades fell to the Teutonic Knights, a military order formed in the Holy Land in 1190. They were aided by the constant support of the Roman pontiff and by a steady flow of mercenaries from throughout Christendom.

The subsequent Scandinavian campaigns laid the foundations of modern Baltic society by destroying pagan rural farming settlements, and establishing fortified Christian towns and major castles. As with the majority of crusades, the prospective acquisition of land and power was the one of the key driving forces behind these bloody military expeditions.

This book reveals the colorful history of these Crusades when the soldiers of the Pope fought their way across Eastern Europe and inexorably changed the future of the continent.

About the Author

David Lindholm MA, was born in 1970. He was educated at the University of Lund in Sweden where he studied medieval archaeology, history and ethnology. He is also a specialist of medieval weaponry and warfare.

David Nicolle was born in 1944 and worked in the BBC Arabic service for a number of years, before gaining an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and a doctorate from Edinburgh University. He has written many books and articles on medieval and Islamic warfare.

Wonderful book

I am Lithuanian and I had been told that Lithuania lost her huge land because of fighting with Poland. This book corrected that thinking. It is simple, but clear. Again the Catholic Church ruined an Empire. The Swedes couldn't wait to attack the peaceful Baltic Countries and they got permission from the Catholic Church to do just that. These were countries who were trading nicely and hurting no one. The countries of Finland, Russia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Poland were attacked. Why? Because they were not Christians yet. What happened to the teachings of Jesus to go out and preach to nations about the good news? No lets just kill them and force it down their throats. This is what this book shows and it does a great job. Colorful pictures and real nice descriptions.

Don't even hesitate on this one

If you are doing research on Russian organized crime in any kind of depth, this book is a must-have. Extremely comprehensive, with essays by a variety of experts on the subject, all with different perspectives and angles by which they discourse on the topic.

This book also cites endless more sources for further reading within the text itself, providing not only multiple sources due to the varying authors but even more sources in the footnotes and endnotes.

Not to mention there is a primary source of the documentation of an investigation of Russian emigres in New York, along with other diagrams and statistics useful and understandable.

Well-written and concise, "The New Threat?" is an extremely useful and wide-ranging collection of essays ideal for preliminary research on this topic.

It may seem pricey, but if you are looking for information about the Red Mafiya, it is WELL worth the price.

About the Author

Dr. NANCY BONVILLAIN received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University in 1972, with specializations in linguistics and in Native American cultures.  She has carried out fieldwork in the Navajo Nation in Arizona and extensive linguistic fieldwork at the Akwesasne Mohawk Reserve in Ontario/Quebec, beginning in 1969.  There she began the efforts to develop materials for language maintenance programs, completing her dissertation (A Grammar of Akwesasne Mohawk) and working with community members on dictionaries and conversations.

 

Dr. Bonvillain has taught on the undergraduate and graduate levels in several universities including Michigan State University and the State University of New York at Stonybrook.  She taught in the summer session of Columbia University from 1982 until 2008.  She currently teaches anthropology and linguistics at Bard College at Simon’s Rock where she is also the Director of the Tutoring and Writing Center.

 

Dr. Bonvillain has published numerous articles on topics in Mohawk linguistics and Iroquoian ethnohistory.  She has written seventeen books in the North American Indian cultures and histories series published by Chelsea House.  And she has written four textbooks published by Prentice-Hall, including Language, Culture, and Communication (currently in its 6th edition), Women and Men: Cultural Constructs of Gender (4th edition), Native Nations: Cultures and Histories of Native North America, and Cultural Anthropology (3rd edition in press).

Interesting

I enjoyed reading the topics and it covered so many aspects of various cultures thoroughly. I was also taking a sociology class at the time and that class and book had nothing on this one -- I will definitely remember what I learned from this book. It was all very relevant in understanding how our culture is set up and why we have the points of view that we have, and how and why other cultures are different (although that seems like the obvious intention of a cultural anthropology book, my sociology book was also supposed to glean similar insight but failed miserably, whereas this book did a thorough and good job of it).

I didn't think the book was long-winded or confusing -- those opinions probably have something to do with either the class or one's opinion of the subject.

It references native american cultures a lot -- because they're so varied, it's interesting, but it seems the author had a particular love of them (though it doesn't detract from the text, and many, many other cultures are referenced, also).

I think if you read this book and understand the implications of it, you'll be able to better understand what being a human is really comprised of and will probably walk away more open-minded and tolerant.

Also, I have a custom edition book for my school that has the same name and author and year but a different cover -- I'm assuming has the same general information, whether or not the format is the same.

Textbok - but really learned a lot

Great Text for an anthropology class! I bought it because it was mandatory, but I found myself actually wanted to read from it. Presented well, and I learned a lot. Great examples and description were given to really help wrap your mind around the ideas. it's hard living in today's society in the U.S. and imagining some of these examples, but the book does a great job of really letting you into other societies! One of the few text I enjoyed reading

A good book -- much of an American Indian slant -- but lots of review at the end of the chapters, etc. Worked nicely with the online videos from my college class.

An Outstanding Book

Although the importance of glial cells is often underappreciated, they are as critical as neurons in maintaining brain function. This outstanding book on glial cells provides a comprehensive treatment of their vast functions and attributes in a concise, entertaining and highly readable style. As such, this book will be a valuable resource for researchers and trainees at all levels, filling the large gap between current reference books and student textbooks. The authors are leading researchers of glial cell physiology and their expertise and insight allows them to present encyclopedic coverage of nearly all physiological mechanisms and functions of the major glial cell types. The book is thoroughly referenced and impeccably organized, covering physiological and pathophysiological functions of glia. An additional intellectually engrossing aspect of the book is that it describes the changing perceptions and roles of glial cells within the historical contexts of both the development of neuroscience and the evolution of the nervous system. The expertise of the authors also enables them to critically evaluate controversial issues, including the "...role of astroglial release of neurotransmitters", pointing out the pros and cons of current evidence and need for further research, perspective that will be beneficial to trainees and researchers in other fields. As stated in the Preface, this book was written to fill the gap between an introduction to basic glia biology and a comprehensive reference book. The authors have perfectly centered the goal. Glial Physiology and Pathophysiology covers a number of aspects in this field, providing a most pleasant reading for students and researchers wishing to enlarge their view of neurobiology and understand the function and dys-function of neurons in the context of neighboring neuroglial cells.
The book begins with a captivating chapter on the history of discoveries in this field and develops to a detailed description of different types of glia and their function, physiology and contribution in neurological diseases.
Beautiful illustrations and clarifying drawings help the reader and make the book even more enjoyable. Last, but not the least, figures and tables can be downloaded, providing a resource and an inspiration for teachers and academics.

...for anyone wanting to get to grips with the Westminster of the 1990s, though as an official at the time, I recognise some but not all the characters in the plot. The mysteries of the Whips' Office are explained a little, and that's a start in reforming the Mother of Parliaments.
