About the Author
Jean Piaget (1896-1980) is known for investigations of thought processes as well as his epistemological work with children. His theory of cognitive development, coupled with his studies with children, is known as genetic epistemology. He was professor at Geneva University and director and founder of the International Center for Epistemology. He is the author of The Language and Thought of the Child, Judgment and Reasoning in the Child, The Origin of Intelligence in Children, and The Early Growth of Logic in the Child.
Helen Weaver has translated over fifty books from the French of which one, Antonin Artaud: Selected Writings (FSG) was a Finalist for the National Book Award in translation in 1976. She is co-author and general editor of the Larousse Encyclopedia of Astrology and author of The Daisy Sutra, a book on animal communication. She lives in Kingston, New York.
Jerome Kagan is a developmental psychologist, a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and emeritus professor at Harvard University. He has received the Distinguished Scientist Awards from the American Psychological Association and the Society for Research in Child Development. Jerome Kagan has written several books dealing with the assumptions of the social sciences. He is best known for his research on moral development, infant cognition, and temperamental biases in children.

A SUMMARY OVERVIEW OF THE WORK OF PIAGET AND INHELDER

Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist known for his epistemological studies with children. His theory of cognitive development and epistemological view are known as "genetic epistemology". Bärbel Inhelder (1913-1997) was a Swiss developmental psychologist; she was probably Piaget's most well-known co-worker.
The authors state in the Preface, "In this volume we have tried to present, as briefly and as clearly as possible , a synthesis, or summing up. of our work in child psychology. A book such as this seemed to us particularly desirable since our published studies have been spread out over a number of volumes, some of them quite lengthy and some of them fairly difficult to read. This little book, of course, is not meant to be a substitute for reading the other volumes. But it represents, we believe, a useful introduction to the questions we have studied and will enable the reader to gain an adequate understanding of what we have learned in our investigations."
